The operator should always inspect the tyres before using the forklift truck and suggest a replacement when necessary.

How To Ensure Safe Outdoor Operations Of Forklifts

How to Ensure Safe Outdoor Operations of Forklifts

Forklifts are useful material handling equipment that can be both indoors and outdoors. From warehouses and manufacturing plants to outdoor construction sites, docks, and container yards, also lifting heavy materials on the roughest terrain. Forklift trucks are versatile and help operators lift, carry, and store heavy cargo with ease.

While outdoor forklifts are extremely useful, outdoor applications require specifications of the forklift to be different than the one for indoor applications. So here are a few tips that can help you ensure maximum safety and avoid accidents while working outdoors.

Maintain your Forklift Regularly

On being exposed to outdoor elements the overall lifecycle of the equipment can decrease. Outdoor forklifts naturally have the potential to wear out early and require maintenance earlier than those deployed indoors. It is important for the operator to ensure scheduled maintenance and servicing.

Safety checks like oil, fluid, and coolant levels are vital to reduce hazards. Low coolant levels can lead to overheating, which can cause damage to the engine, fluid pipelines, and electronics of the diesel forklift truck. Poorly inflated tires and a lack of essential fluids prior to use can be exceptionally hazardous. The operator must always keep the tire pressure in check. Low tire pressure can increase the chances of running flat which makes the reach truck inoperable, in turn, reducing productivity.

Stay Vigilant

Working outdoors also calls for unpredictability. In a closed indoor environment, the workforce and material handling jobs can easily be streamlined to reduce hazards. However, operating forklifts in outdoor applications should be vigilant and always keep their surroundings in check. They should be able to continuously recognize potential hazards, such as obstacles and pedestrians, and avoid accidents. It's important to stay calm and focused while driving the reach truck with both hands on the wheel. It is also mandatory to operate the forklift according to the guidelines and take into consideration the safety features of the forklift.

Establish and Use Safety Systems

Effective safety communication is the key to successful and productive material handling operations. Any communication gaps between the team and the forklift operator can lead to damage to man, machine and load. When everyone knows when, where, and what task is taking place the risk of accidents decreases.

The forklifts have Safety systems to ensure that the forklift is operational with utmost safety.

Keep a note of the Weather

Weather can present new challenges for the operators. It is the biggest factor affecting outdoor working conditions directly. It is important for workers and operators to have a clear understanding of the impact of the weather on their ability to function safely.

Linde forklifts are weather operational and can work in various weather. Check with product manual whether the forklift can work in the work environment required or not. Forklifts are heavy machines and trained operators are mandatory for all equipment operation. Alongside, all the staff should have regular refresher training to keep their knowledge up to date. By following these tips, operators can greatly reduce the risk of an incident occurring, promoting the safety and efficiency of the construction site, dockyard, or other outdoor environments.

Ensure Maximum Safety For Your MHE Operators

Ensure Maximum Safety for your MHE Operators

With the increasing automation and reliance on material handling equipment and systems, warehouse and storage facilities need to go the extra mile when it comes to personnel safety. Along with appropriate training and hiring certified operators for safe equipment operation, it is also important to ensure the safety of the operator themselves.

Most industries require workers to conform to basic uniform standards—forklift trucks, electric stackers, reach trucks, or other heavy-duty equipment operators are no exception. Wearing appropriate clothing ensures optimal levels of safety alongside increasing their productivity and efficiency. Inappropriate clothing can often lead to injuries and fatalities if the worst happens. So, it is crucial for supervisors to ensure adherence to such basic measures.

Let's understand why protective gear is important for forklift operators.

Forklifts trucks are versatile—they are used for a wide range of tasks and in different environments. When working in confined spaces and narrow aisles a small mistake can lead to catastrophic accidents. In such a case protective gear like an industrial helmet can save the operator’s head from plummeting cargo. Similarly, in outdoor operations, the correct clothing and gear can add an extra layer of armor and protect them from harm while they go about their work.

There are many protective measures that can be considered to ensure the safety of your skilled personnel, here are some of the very basic gear and measures that must be set in place to ensure optimal safety at your workplace.

  1. Head protection

Protecting the head from falling objects is paramount when operating any material handling equipment. Every work environment poses threats to the personnel involved. In warehouses, there is the ever-present risk of something tumbling from high racking, so wearing an industrial-grade hardhat is essential.

Forklift trucks have robust frameworks that cover the top of the vehicle but other machines like electric stackers and hand-held pallet trucks that do not offer a cabin for the drivers become prone. Head protection gear offers safety to the operators as well as other employees while working in confined spaces and moving loads well above head level.

  1. Eye Protection

Safety goggles and face shields are gears that protect the worker’s eyes from environmental hazards. It becomes extremely important when operating in dusty or windy environments, around toxic materials or chemicals that may compromise the vision of an operator. Driving a forklift is a job with a high level of responsibility, so having a clear vision is important for everyone’s safety.

  1. Reflective Safety Clothing

Having great visibility is important for forklift truck drivers but it is equally important that they are clearly visible to all other workplace staff. Various materials handling jobs often require the vehicle driver to get in and out of the vehicle regularly while performing their job, so they must be able to be seen clearly when working both in and around their vehicles.  Reflective clothing alerts other workers that heavy machines are being used in the area.

  1. Foot protection

For an operator, it is important to wear appropriate safety footwear while operating a forklift truck. Industrial shoes with puncture-proof soles and toe protection helps to keep drivers’ feet safe from environmental hazards and prevent crushing in the event of an object falling onto the foot. The same also stands true for other material handling equipment, like electric stacker and reach truck operators as they are also prone to similar risks.

  1. Hand protection

Operating a forklift involves handling various tasks that require the operator to move out of the cabin and lock, load, and secure cargo before lifting. Safety gloves protect the operator’s hands from harm when handling such loads. They also shield the operator's skin from residue oil and sharp or rough facets that the load might have. This ensures maximum resistance against abrasion or injuries.

Minimize Risks With Linde Safety

Minimize Risks with Linde Safety

Safety in the warehouse or production environment is the number one priority in intralogistics. Factories, warehouses, and other industries that deal with heavy equipment are places where safety regulations should be followed foremost. Inadequate safety precautions can often lead to accidents and in turn loss of productivity. So, establishing regulations and ensuring adherence to various standard operating protocols is the key to creating a sustainable workplace.

Most modern manufacturing and warehousing companies deploy a material handling equipment fleet to increase agility, efficiently handle materials and derive productivity. However, operating such machines to handle heavy and bulky loads is a job that requires responsibility and accountability. Linde forklifts are integrated with curve control, operator presence system. There are accessories available as well which can be easily fitted to make the machine adapt to new requirements. These are Blue Spot lighting, rear view camera with proximity sensor, red zone lighting, Linde motion detection

Thus, taking certain measures, along with appropriate training, guidance, and vigilance is necessary for smooth, steady, and safe operation. Here is a list of how you can minimize risks appropriately:

Personal Safety measures

Employing well-trained personnel for the task is crucial but it is also important to ensure that they follow an optimal personal safety convention while operating. Safety uniform such as helmets, glasses, safety vest, industry shoes, proper dress are required. Carelessness at work can often lead to inefficiency, bottlenecks, and even accidents. However, it’s not uncommon for drivers to lose focus and neglect their personal safety while performing daily tasks. So having regulatory surveillance at every time any type of material handling equipment; be it warehouse reach truck, Electric forklift, or Diesel forklift, is being used is vital to ensure driver safety.

It is also important to recognize the need to wear a seatbelt while operating any forklift.  Linde’s orange seat belts offer great protection to the drivers while also allowing supervisors an opportunity to enforce their usage. Additionally, Linde Forklifts are equipped with a sequential seat belt monitoring system that ensures that the driver is buckled up before moving the vehicle.

Further, safety doors are a great attachment for outdoor worksites. It offers an extra level of protection for the forklift operator, meanwhile also providing better weather protection. The doors are designed such that they don’t obstruct the driver’s vision and effectively minimize the risk of harm due to obstacles and objects around the forklift truck.

Ensure optimal driver visibility

When operating material handling equipment, it is important to cling to certain safety protocols to ensure maximum performance. One of the major reasons behind most forklift-related experiments is visibility. To avoid such challenges Linde has designed its indoor Electric forklifts and Diesel forklifts trucks such that it ensures all-round visibility. The company has developed specially encapsulated lift masts to make the trucks safer to use.

Additionally, the Linde forklift’s uniquely designed Protector frame gives a protective zone to the operator in case the load falls. It consists of a solid connection between the cab roof and frame. Further, the drivers must always wear appropriate gear that includes helmets, gloves, safety goggles, shoulder protection hoop-guards, etc., to reduce chances of injuries in case of an accident.

Embrace advanced equipment

Linde has integrated a system that ensures safety by implementing commands through two processors simultaneously for lifting and driving. This state-of-the-art technology gives greater precision and prevention of control-related errors.

Further, Linde forklift trucks are equipped with an automated parking-braking system that ensures the stability of the vehicle and loads at all times, minimizing the risk of collision or weight imbalance.

Summary:

Material handling operations is a crucial operation that calls for a safe and conducive work environment. Be it loading and unloading with trucks or working in close proximity with the machines, there are risks attached to such situations. Observing desired vigilance and following safe practices can be instrumental in keeping a check on any hazardous situation from rearing its head.

4 Efficient Ways To Lower Warehouse Costs

4 Efficient Ways to Lower Warehouse Costs

Setting up a warehouse can be a cumbersome task. Various factors like size, capacity, location, type of storage, material handling, etc., need to be taken into consideration. These choices depend on the type of business and capital investment you are willing to make. But, cost-cutting is crucial to any business. Reducing a fraction of this cost requires dedicated effort from every person involved in the warehousing company.

So here are 4 ways that can help you reduce your warehouse costs and also improve productivity.

1. Optimize storage to reduce cost per area

It is not essential to set up a large warehouse to ascertain efficiency. Optimizing and using a suitable storage method to utilize your available space effectively can drastically reduce land expenses.

Storage methods like racking allow you to optimize space and store inventory efficiently. Instead of increasing the number of pallets, you can consider various different racking combinations that require lesser space and have a higher capacity. The most common being, tall and narrow racking. Finding the best-suited storage method accompanied by the required warehousing equipment by Linde forklift India like electric pallet truck, electric forklift, etc. increases productivity, in turn, profits.

You can also optimize the aisle widths at the storage facilities. Aisles usually are excessively wide and cover a large space in warehouses. In order to reduce the land cost, you can implement a narrow aisle arrangement and use a very narrow aisle truck. To support productivity, you can use material handling equipment that can operate in such closed spaces.

2. Build a reliable workforce

Employees are the core of every business organization. However, warehouses especially need employees and labour in abundance making them one of the biggest expenses for the management.

So, training employees for their specific role can encourage retention. This, in turn, reduces your investments in hiring. Further, provide them with the opportunity for professional development.

Additionally, foster a positive work culture, initiate employee recognition initiatives, and ensure that everyone follows all the safety guidelines in the warehouse. These activities can further increase employee retention rates at the warehouse.

3. Increase productivity with efficient material handling

A productive and efficient process is the key to reducing warehouse costs. In order to achieve that, investing in the necessary material handling equipment is the key. There are certain ways to reduce operational costs and increase efficiency, whilst saving and choosing the right equipment is crucial to achieving a targeted cost-cut.

To begin with, consider all the possible equipment options that fit your warehouse material handling and transportation requirements. Prioritize on understanding these needs. Consider renting or buying used equipment from Linde forklift India as per your requirement.

Further, you can also consider your fuel options. Electric or battery-powered equipment can prove to be easy to charge and handle. Linde forklift India offers a range of electric forklifts, reach truck, electric stacker, electric pallet truck etc, for you to choose from.

4. Train your staff for regular preventive maintenance

Failures, repairs, mis-management and accidents can also lead to unprecedented expenses. It is crucial to understand the importance of maintenance and caretaking of resources of the warehouse. Train your staff adequately before using any type of material handling equipment to avoid damage to goods and accidents.

Further, using preventative maintenance measures, empowering the employees with the tools and safety solutions, along with regular safety training can ensure consistent performance, efficiency and productivity at the warehouse.

A Thoroughly Cleaned Forklift Can Enhance Productivity Of Your Warehousing Facility

A thoroughly cleaned forklift can enhance productivity of your warehousing facility

Material handling equipment are essential warehouse assets as they keep the business running. But they alone cannot keep working to its optimum potential. They need to be looked after to ensure they deliver their best. Be it an electric forklift used indoor or a diesel forklift used outdoors, regularly cleaning forklift has numerous benefits. For this you must make sure that the worksite supervisors and the operators of your warehousing facility are aware about the tips to keep the forklift clean. Failing to do so can hamper the productivity levels of your facility as well as result in spending more on maintenance. Consider these cleaning tips to keep the machinery at your facility in a good working condition.

1. Put on protective workwear

First things first, wear protective clothing. While cleaning a forklift or any material handling equipment it is imperative to ensure that you’re taking all the safety precautions while carrying out any cleaning procedure. Tough boots, safety hats, goggles, and glove are some of the must wears to ensure that you’re protected from the probable harm that might be caused cleaning procedure.

2. Get rid of the dust and the debris

The least you must do to clean your forklift is to grab a brush, broom, or a duster to wipe off the dirt and debris accumulated in the gaps, near the steps, and footrest of the forklift. Neglecting this first and easy step of forklift cleaning can result in issues that could have been easily prevented in the first place. For instance, a diesel forklift encounters a lot of dirt and dust as it is mostly used outdoors. So, it becomes necessary for the operator to clean it everyday and ensure it works fine before getting behind the wheels.

3. Use high pressure water cleaner

Soap and water alone cannot help clean a forklift thoroughly. If your forklift finds application mostly on the outdoors, cleaning that stubborn dirt on the tyres and the bottom is not easy. You need a professional cleaning equipment like a high-pressure water cleaner that uses tank water and foam to get rid of the mud. If not cleaned regularly, the mud will prevent the parts from working to its optimum potential.

Also, if the forklift is likely to come in contact with a hazardous chemical you need to check if mixing of the chemical with soap will cause a dangerous reaction. If yes, then it is recommended using high-pressure cleaners to clean the forklift.

4. Take the top to bottom approach

Cleaning the forklift’s top portion first and then moving to the bottom makes the cleaning process efficient. The reason behind it is gravity. This approach will help you get rid of the dirt in an easier way.

5. Let the forklift dry inside out

Letting the forklift dry is as important as cleaning it. Not all parts of a forklift are waterproof. Some parts may be highly sensitive to water leading to an electric shock especially in case of an electric forklift or cause any other kind of damage. So, whenever you wash your forklift, make sure you’re giving it ample time to let it dry.

Cleaning your forklift not only enhances the appearance of a forklift but increases the performance of your warehouse as well. A clean forklift helps you save time, energy, and money in the long run.

If you feel that regularly cleaning your forklift isn’t reaping much benefits, its time for you to consider upgrading your machinery. If you own a material handling business, keeping the productivity levels peaked all the time can be a challenge. To ensure your business is making progress, it is imperative to look for ways to increase uptime and productivity. For the ‘how’ part of the equation, here are three simple steps that can do wonders for your business.

1. Check if your employees are using their time effectively

Good time management is the key to increasing productivity. When you are looking for areas in your material handling facility that needs improvement, the first thing you must do is assess if everyone’s time is being used efficiently. The employees who stick to the clock and focus on completing tasks at hand with minimal distraction are observed to be more productive.

In most cases, employees spend more time dealing with equipment breakdowns than focusing on delivering value to the customer. One effective way to identify instances where there is a lack of time management is by discussing challenges with your employees and incorporating their feedback at the worksite.

2. Money saved is money earned

There are a lot of instances where facility supervisors could have saved expenses but they didn't. Calculating and investigating where the money is being spent and finding ways to save it can help in many ways. For instance, many companies tend to invest money in a piece of superior machinery like a heavy-duty electric forklift when an electric stacker would have been enough to do the job. An electric stacker not only costs less but also have several environmental benefits. The decision to choose between an electric stacker and a heavy-duty electric forklift in this case can be taken with the help of a forklift manufacturer.

Furthermore, the money saved by taking an expert’s advice can be invested in other business areas that promise growth and productivity.

If you are looking for a forklift manufacturer in India, you can consider Linde Material Handling India for consultation, sales, maintenance services, and spare parts.

3. Setting realistic goals

If you want to focus on making optimum use of time and finances, you need to have a plan in place with clearly defined goals. Meeting set goals like the scheduled forklift maintenance to reduce machine breakdown incidents, planning an annual forklift training program to help operators work efficiently, will help you assess business areas that you need to work on.

Asking yourself questions like - why you think it’s profitable and how much profit it will deliver, will help you develop a precise and effective plan. Working with your employees on this will help you set realistic goals, aiding productivity and uptime. As the workforce experiences things closely, they can give honest feedback as well as contribute to making your facility an efficient one.

4. The right choice can result in a productivity boost

Material handling businesses often find it challenging to find the right equipment for their needs. As a result, they end up investing in machinery that doesn’t optimally serve their purpose. This leads to a decrease in productivity levels and a waste of time and money. Choosing the right fit for your material handling needs can significantly increase productivity levels and save time and money.

Linde forklift is well equipped to help you find machinery that is best suited for your business. If you are running on a tight budget, Linde forklift also offer you forklift rental services that will help you meet your business demands without spending much.

How Fleet Managers Can Use Forklift Optimally?

How Fleet Managers Can Use Forklift Optimally?

Managing fleet optimally is a challenge for fleet managers in every material handling company alike as it directly impacts productivity levels and expenses. As forklifts are subjected to intense workload daily, it is imperative to prioritize fleet management to ensure all the products of the fleet work efficiently. Failing to do so can introduce you to many issues that can increase the risk quotient of your warehousing facility. But when done right, it has numerous benefits to offer. Proper fleet management includes regular maintenance, organizing critical records, and proper forklift training to name a few. In this article, we will be looking at more aspects that help managing forklift fleet optimally and result in increasing productivity of the worksite, longevity of forklift, and enhance workplace safety.

Controlling and reducing damage costs

Damages caused to the forklift due to improper use, impacts can add to the maintenance cost, infrastructure repairs and uptime losses. For fleet managers, keeping an eye on every minor detail of the forklift is necessary. Running a thorough check highlights potential defects in the vehicle that if overlooked can cause major loss to goods and hamper safety at the worksite. At times it can be challenging for fleet managers to keep track of all the forklifts in the warehouse. Fleet management software can help them record the minor details of forklift in use and flag in case of any issues are identified. This not only helps fleet managers to keep all the fleet records organized but also enable them to focus on other aspects of the business and worksite management. Also, products which are technologically upgraded should be used. Linde MH products are advanced which minimizes any damage caused to material and facility. Most of the products have sensors and special warning systems which makes them the best in Safety.

Train your fleet operators

The onus of ensuring that the forklift fleet is working up to its optimum potential falls equally on the fleet managers and operators. Forklift training plays an important role in helping the operators understand driving a material handling vehicle is nothing similar to other vehicles. Hence, a proper certification is mandatory to operate a forklift as driving without a licence brings with it a lot of risks. The forklift training program not only focuses on safe operation of forklift but also sheds light on its proper maintenance. From performing a daily inspection to dos and don’ts of forklift operation, everything is covered in a forklift training program. But it is also important to know that forklift training changes based on the type of forklift an operator will be working on. If your fleet consists of different type of forklifts, it is obvious that an operator will have to undergo training depending upon the type of forklift he/she needs to work with. Also offering forklift training once in a year irrespective of adding a new member to fleet is important as updating forklift operators about new features and functionalities is imperative to offer a safe working environment. Linde MH India takes extra effort in training the operators and users regularly.

Partner with a fleet maintenance provider

It is challenging for fleet managers to handle an entire storage facility if the area to be covered is too big. In such circumstances, fleet manager’s best companion is a fleet maintenance provider. This team possesses expertise in fleet management that covers vehicle inspection, repair and maintenance, fuel management, and battery maintenance to name a few. Having a fleet maintenance provider makes it easier for the managers to focus on other important business decisions and focus on fleet management as well.

Consider forklift rental services

Warehousing workload is subjected to increase or decrease at any point of time. In such cases, as a fleet manager you must assess the usability of all your forklifts.  It is important to keep all the forklift running to ensure they are in a good working condition as an ideal forklift can cost you more than a running one. If there is a significant drop and rise of workload at your warehousing facility, it is recommended you consider forklift rental services instead of buying a new forklift every time there is a need. This decision will ensure that you don’t disrupt your budget and also keep the repair and maintenance expenses pocket friendly. If you are looking forward to leveraging forklift rentals services to fulfil your business needs, Linde Forklifts India is the leading forklift manufacturer in the country which you can consider. Linde N20 C

Linde N20 C – The Newest Addition to Low-Level Order Picker for your Warehouse

Every warehouse requires a lot of picking around, packing, and stacking goods. As such, material handling is one of the core activities in a warehouse. As consumer demands increase, so does the requirement of efficiency in goods management & logistics. It means, the pick rates and throughput times must be increased, error rates must be reduced, and the health-related absence of employees must be prevented. Keeping this in mind, Linde MHE, has developed its newest fleet of order picker trucks - the N20C series.

The N20C blends perfectly with other manufacturer trucks

With peculiar battery arrangement, the driver’s stand-on platform, and load handling module, the N20C is assembled to resemble the standard designs. This allows the forklift operators easy transition between trucks of different manufacturers. The low entry height and the wide vehicle access of the driver’s platform make it easy to enter and leave - something which is required frequently during day-to-day order picking.

Talk about ergonomic design

Engineered for maximized comfort and performance, the perfectly positioned handles provide a secure hold, even during reverse. Driving on uneven grounds becomes a game with (optional) equipment features such as the pneumatically damped stand-on platform, which reduces the impact and shocks. The padded backrest, which provides for a safe position while driving, can optionally be adjusted to suit the operator’s height. A fold-out driver’s seat (with a sensor for driver recognition) is also integrated for longer distances or waiting times. The (optional) padded knee protection adds to the comfort while sitting.
The view is better from here
To ensure driving is as distraction-free as possible, we have deliberately positioned the multi-function color display below the steering wheel. Then there’s also the new height-adjustable steering wheel. The Rocker switches for forward and reverse driving are integrated into the round shape which has a rubberized surface for optimum grip. They can be operated on both sides using the thumb or index finger. The clearly arranged screen displays the most important information relevant to the truck – from the state of the battery charge to service instructions.

Caring for the tiniest of aspects can lead to greater results

Upon request, the modular fleet management software “Linde connect” with access control, damage monitoring, and usage analysis can also be installed onboard the new trucks.

Picking in a busy environment does not come without the high risk of material damage and accident. As a preventive measure, the Linde N20 C comes with a whole range of standard and optionally available safety features. Apart from an excellent view of the driveway and load, the N20C consists of additional features like the hydraulically assisted braking unit which varies the braking effect of the order picker in relation to the load picked up. The Linde Curve Control system reduces the speed in relation to the steering angle and prevents tip-over accidents when navigating corners. To avoid damage to shelves, goods, or the vehicle itself, special bumpers can be mounted on the front of the truck. Additional equipment features such as powerful LED front headlamps, the Linde BlueSpot, front panoramic mirror, protective screens or grids for the mast, and various load guards round off the range of offerings. The new models of the Linde N20 C low-level order picker ensure comfortable, safe, and above all cost-optimized order picking in the load range between 1.2 and 2.5 tons.
